Next Outdoor Meeting - 9am, Saturday 18th April

Birding La Société's Reserves Meet at the Scramble Track car park at Pleinmont for a guided walk around the Charles David Nature Reserve.

Next Indoor Meeting - Thursday 4th June

The next indoor meeting will be at 7.30pm on Thursday 4th June at Candie. It is an open meeting for everyone interested in local birdlife. Tea/coffee and biscuits served.

WASHED UP SEABIRDS

As a result of recent storms, people are reporting Puffins and other seabirds washed up dead or stranded along our coast, as well as in Alderney, Jersey, the UK and France. We are working with the other Channel Islands to coordinate records. If you see a dead seabird, please email ornithology@societe.org.gg to let us know the date and place. If you see a stranded seabird, please contact the GSPCA 01481 257261 and send us an email. Photos would be helpful.

Bird Section Subs 2026

Dear birders, 2026 Bird Section subscriptions can be paid now. Annual subs pay for costs such as the hosting of this website, nestboxes on La Societe's nature reserves and upkeep of seven public bird hides. By paying just £5, you will be supporting and promoting local birdlife. Ways to pay - Either: directly to the Ornithology Section using cash, an online payment or standing order - please email jamie.hooper@cwgsy.net for banking details Or: include Ornithology Section when joining/renewing La Société Guernesiaise online https://societe.org.gg/wp/join/ Only Societe members can technically be section members but donations from non-members are welcome too! Rue Des Bergers - access to top hide

Members are asked to note that due to the door opening outwards, wheelchair users are advised to only access the hide if they are accompanied. Thank you.

Uploading photos

When a photo is uploaded initially, a glitch shows the species as 'unidentified shrew'. Go to 'upload photos' and choose 'edit details' alongside the photo. Use the species drop down list to choose the actual species and 'update'.

Colin Best NR - hide access

At present La Societe does not hold a lease on this nature reserve. The hide overlooking the freshwater Scrape is still in situ but is in a state of disrepair. The landowner remains happy for people to access the hide (only) but visitors will not be covered by La Societe's insurance.

Use of uploaded photographs

We are always pleased for people to upload their photos to the website. For clarification, from now on, by submitting photos to this website, you agree that they may be used by the Ornithology Section and La Société Guernesiaise for publications such as newsletters, event posters, reports, surveys etc. Photos will be credited where possible. Sharing photos and sightings on this website helps to improve out wildlife knowledge and contributes to science and conservation.

Protection for local waders

Over the last 40 years, local populations of many wading birds have plummeted and some species have been lost entirely. The long-running 'Wader Count' survey shows that disturbance is a major factor in the decline. If you agree that our waders need urgent protection at key sites, please email the States of Guernsey Agriculture, Countryside and Land Management Service (ACLMS) at this address - aclms@gov.gg
